Empathic and Embodied Imagination

written by Juhani Pallasmaa

Why is it that architecture and architects, unlike film and filmmakers, are so little interested in people during the design process? Why are they so theoretical, so distant from life in general?

As I am not a neuroscientist, I will not attempt to speak directly of theories and perspectives of neuroscience. I intend to valorise the architect’s mind during the creative process as well as in the experiencing of architecture. My approach is a phenomenological account of a person with fifty years of experience not only in the design process but also in thinking about the experiential encounter with works of art and architecture. I wish to shake some of the stubbornly held assumptions in my field.
